How to Choose the Right Clarinet Reed Strength
How to tell if your clarinet reed is too hard, too soft, or right for you
Reed strength can easily start to feel like a grading system.
You begin on a 1.5 or 2. Then comes 2.5, followed by 3, 3.5 and perhaps eventually 4.
I see students get caught by this regularly. They’ll arrive at a lesson pleased that they’ve moved up a reed strength, yet the clarinet has suddenly become harder to play. Notes take longer to respond. Articulation feels heavier. After a while, the jaw starts pressing harder against the reed to help it speak.
Moving up a strength has simply given them a more resistant reed.
The number on the box gives you somewhere to start. The better test is how that reed responds when you play.
Quick answer
A reed could be too hard if: notes consistently take too much effort to start, soft playing becomes difficult and your jaw starts adding pressure as you play.
A reed could be too soft if: it feels very easy at first but becomes difficult to regulate as you play louder, closes too readily or makes you back away from the air.
One symptom isn’t enough to decide. Try several healthy reeds and look for the same behaviour before changing strength.
What Does Clarinet Reed Strength Mean?
Compare two reeds from the same range, perhaps a 2 and a 3.
The stronger reed will generally resist bending more. You’ll feel that difference when you play it.
That resistance isn’t automatically good or bad.
You need enough for the reed to remain stable through the dynamics and registers you’re playing, without making the clarinet unnecessarily difficult to respond.
The numbers aren’t universal either. A strength 3 in one brand or reed model can feel quite different from a 3 in another. Current ICA guidance specifically cautions that reed strengths don’t correspond exactly between brands or models.
If you’re changing reeds, a manufacturer’s comparison chart can get you close.
Then play them.
What Reed Strength Should a Beginner Use?
For younger beginners, particularly students around 6 to 14 years old, I generally start by trying a 1.5 or 2 strength reed on a suitable beginner mouthpiece.
A beginner is already learning to coordinate their air, tongue and embouchure. If the reed requires too much effort to respond, the student can start compensating by biting or squeezing against it.
For a younger student who finds the clarinet resistant, I’ll usually compare a 1.5 and a 2.
For an older beginner, a 2 is frequently a sensible starting point.
I treat those numbers as starting points, not age rules.
Two students of the same age can need different reeds. Their mouthpieces can also make the same reed feel quite different.
The ICA Clarinet Pedagogy Enhancement Committee advises developing the air column and embouchure before increasing reed strength. That’s a useful principle here. There is no need to move a student to 2.5 simply because they’ve been playing for a certain number of months.
If a 2 responds cleanly, gives the student a useful dynamic range and isn’t restricting the playing they’re doing, I leave it alone.
I wait until the reed gives us a reason to change.
Why Reeds From the Same Box Feel Different
Open a box of reeds and play three of them.
One might respond beautifully.
Another feels harder.
A third might need some playing before it settles.
That’s normal.
Natural cane isn’t perfectly uniform, and moisture also changes its mechanical behaviour. So two reeds carrying the same strength number don’t have to feel identical.
This gives us a useful rule for the rest of the article:
One reed is a comparison. Look for a pattern before changing strength.
If one 2.5 feels unusually hard, try another.
If the same problem keeps appearing across your rotation, comparing a 2 becomes much more useful.
The same applies before moving upwards. One old or unusually flexible reed doesn’t mean you’ve outgrown 2.5.

Your Mouthpiece Changes How the Reed Feels
A reed that works beautifully on one mouthpiece can feel quite different on another.
You don’t need to know your mouthpiece measurements to make use of this.
The mouthpiece and reed work as a pair. Change the mouthpiece and the amount of resistance you feel from your familiar reed can change with it. The ICA’s healthy-practice guidance specifically recommends reconsidering reed strength after a substantial mouthpiece change.
If you’ve recently changed mouthpieces and your reeds suddenly feel wrong, try the neighbouring strength before changing your embouchure to compensate.
Keep everything else the same.
Same mouthpiece.
Same note.
Same dynamic.
Change the reed.
That gives you a much cleaner comparison.
A Simple Clarinet Reed Strength Test
If you’re unsure between two reed strengths, you don’t need a complicated test.
Use the same clarinet and mouthpiece throughout.
Choose one good reed from each strength.
1. Check the response
Play a comfortable middle-register note.
Listen only to the beginning.
Does the reed respond cleanly, or do you need extra effort to make the note speak?
2. Check quiet playing
Repeat the note quietly.
You shouldn’t need to bite or force the reed to start the note.
3. Check a crescendo
Begin at a comfortable dynamic and gradually play louder.
Listen to how the reed behaves as the air increases.
Does it remain stable, or does it start feeling difficult to regulate?
4. Check a register change
Play a simple register slur.
Pay attention to your jaw.
If you find yourself pressing harder against the reed to make the upper note respond, remember that sensation.
5. Check articulation
Play a short articulated passage.
You’re looking for clean, predictable response without feeling as though your tongue is fighting the reed.
Now repeat the same five tests with the other strength.
You don’t need to decide which reed produces the darkest or biggest sound.
Compare response, stability and effort.
Those three qualities give you much more useful information.
How to Tell if Your Reed Is Too Hard
A reed that’s too hard for your current setup usually gives you more than one clue.
Notes take too much effort to start
The reed repeatedly hesitates before speaking, particularly at quieter dynamics.
Trying another reed from your rotation helps rule out one unusually resistant reed.
If the same problem continues, compare the next strength down.
Your jaw starts helping
This is one I watch closely in lessons.
The clarinet initially feels resistant. After a few minutes, the jaw starts pressing upwards to help the reed respond.
The extra pressure can work temporarily, but you’re now changing the conditions under which the reed vibrates.
This interaction has been measured experimentally. Almeida, George, Smith and Wolfe found that reed stiffness, blowing pressure, lip force and the position of that force all influence the clarinet’s playing regime.
If the softer reed responds more readily and the urge to press disappears, that’s useful evidence.
You tire unusually quickly
Pain, deep teeth marks or rapid fatigue aren’t signs that you need to work harder.
Stop and check the setup.
Try another reed.
Then compare one strength softer.
If the resistance remains regardless of the reed, the cause could be elsewhere. A leak in the clarinet, for example, can make an otherwise suitable setup feel unnecessarily difficult. The ICA specifically warns that equipment problems can lead players to compensate with excess physical tension.
How to Tell if Your Reed Is Too Soft
A reed that’s too soft can initially feel very comfortable because it responds so easily.
The clearer clues appear when you ask more from it.
It becomes difficult to regulate as you play louder
Start comfortably and gradually increase the dynamic.
If the reed feels increasingly unstable as the air increases, compare the next strength up.
You’re looking for greater stability without losing the easy response you had before.
You start backing away from the air
Some players learn to manage a very flexible reed by using less air.
The reed then dictates how they’re allowed to play.
The ICA’s 2025 Clarinet Pedagogy Enhancement Committee material describes the combination of an overly responsive, bright sound that is difficult to regulate, together with the student backing away from the air, as a practical indication that the reed could be too soft.
Treat that as a cluster of signs, not a diagnosis from tone colour alone.
Compare the neighbouring strength.
If you can use the air more freely while retaining clean response, the stronger reed deserves further testing.
The reed closes too readily
If the reed repeatedly closes against the mouthpiece during normal dynamic playing, check your jaw before changing strength.
Extra lower-lip or jaw pressure can also push the reed towards the mouthpiece.
Almeida and colleagues directly measured how increasing blowing pressure and lip force affect reed closure and the playable region of the clarinet.
If your jaw remains comfortable and the behaviour continues across your reed rotation, compare the next strength up.
When Should You Move Up a Reed Strength?
I wouldn’t use time as the deciding factor.
And I wouldn’t move up because one old reed suddenly feels too easy.
Take a few healthy reeds from your current rotation and compare them with the next strength.
Use the five-step test from earlier.
Start with response.
Then dynamic range.
Then physical effort.
If the stronger reed gives you greater stability while keeping the response clean and the physical effort comfortable, moving up makes sense.
If it simply makes the clarinet harder to play, go back.
The same process works in reverse if your current reeds consistently feel too resistant.
So Which Reed Strength Is Right for You?
A good reed should give you enough resistance to work with without forcing you to fight the clarinet.
It should respond cleanly.
It should remain reasonably stable as the dynamic changes.
And you should be able to play without your jaw gradually taking over.
If you’re deciding between two strengths, keep both for a while. Try them across several practice sessions rather than making the decision from five minutes of playing.
And if neither feels right, stop changing reeds for a moment.
Check the mouthpiece.
Check the instrument.
Check whether you’re tired.
Sometimes the reed isn’t the source of the problem.
