Improving tongue speed and quality on clarinet
Articulation is one of the most important parts of clarinet playing.
It affects clarity, rhythm, style, tone quality, and how cleanly a passage speaks. Many students think improving articulation simply means moving the tongue faster, but good tonguing is not just about speed.
It also depends on air support, tongue placement, finger coordination, reed response, and the quality of the note beginning.
A student can have a fast tongue but still sound unclear if the air is weak, the fingers are late, or the tongue is too heavy on the reed.
The goal is not just to tongue faster.
The goal is to articulate clearly, lightly, evenly, and with control.
Tongue Speed vs Articulation Quality
Tongue speed is simply how quickly the tongue can move.
Articulation quality is different. It is about how cleanly each note begins, how consistent the sound is, and whether the tongue is disturbing the tone or helping it speak clearly.
On clarinet, the tongue should not attack the reed aggressively. It should touch lightly and release cleanly, almost like a small valve or prompting mechanism. Its job is to help the reed start vibrating at the right moment, not to hit the reed heavily.
When students tongue too hard, the sound can become harsh, heavy, delayed, or uneven. The note may start with a thud instead of a clean beginning.
Good articulation should still have tone inside it.
Even short notes need a good sound.
Air Comes Before the Tongue
One of the biggest articulation problems students have is trying to tongue without enough air.
The tongue does not create the sound by itself. The air creates the vibration. The tongue simply shapes the beginning of the note.
If the air is weak, the reed will not respond properly. The student may then try to compensate by tonguing harder, biting more, or forcing the sound. This usually creates more tension and less clarity.
Before working on tongue speed, students need to make sure the air is steady and active.
A useful way to think about this is:
The air is already moving. The tongue simply releases the sound.
Or even more specifically:
The tongue prompts the reed to begin vibrating.
This helps students avoid treating articulation as a separate action from tone production.
What Good Clarinet Articulation Should Feel Like
Good articulation should feel light, efficient, and consistent.
The tongue should move as little as possible. If the tongue is moving too far away from the reed, it has to travel further for every note, which slows the articulation down and makes it harder to stay even.
Students should aim for:
● steady air
● light tongue contact
● minimal tongue movement
● consistent note beginnings
● even rhythm
● clear tone on every note
● relaxed jaw and throat
● no biting or squeezing
A good test is this:
If the sound becomes worse when you tongue, the tongue is probably interfering too much.
The tone should stay centred, even when the notes are separated.
Common Articulation Problems
There are a few articulation issues I hear often in students.
1. Tonguing too heavily
This is when the tongue touches the reed with too much pressure. The note may sound blocked, delayed, or aggressive.
The fix is usually to return to a lighter tongue contact while keeping the air moving.
2. Stopping the air between notes
Some students stop the air every time they articulate. This makes the sound disconnected and tense.
The air should continue through the phrase. The tongue separates the notes, but the air line keeps moving.
3. Moving the tongue too far
If the tongue pulls too far away from the reed, the articulation becomes slow and uneven.
Efficient tonguing uses small movement.
4. Fingers and tongue not lining up
Sometimes the tongue is not actually the main problem. The fingers may be late, tense, or uneven.
If the fingers and tongue are not coordinated, the passage will sound messy even if the tongue is moving quickly.
5. Practising too fast too soon
Students often try to improve tongue speed by immediately playing as fast as possible.
This usually reinforces tension.
Speed should come from control first, then gradual tempo increases.
Exercise 1: Building Pure Tongue Speed
The first thing to work on is tongue speed on a single note.
This removes the fingers from the equation and allows the student to focus only on the tongue, air, rhythm, and tone.
Choose one comfortable note, such as open G or throat A.
Start with the metronome at a slow tempo, such as crotchet equals 60.
Play:
● four quavers
● then eight semiquavers
● all on the same note
The aim is to keep every note even, clear, and light.
Do not allow the tongue to become heavy just because the notes become faster.
Once this feels controlled, move up gradually:
● 60
● 70
● 80
● 90
● 100
● 110
● 120
Only increase the tempo when the articulation still sounds clean.
If the sound becomes messy, tense, or uneven, the tempo is too fast for now.
The goal is not to force speed. The goal is to train the tongue to move efficiently.
Exercise 2: Tongue Speed Through a Scale
Once the student can tongue clearly on one note, apply the same articulation pattern to a scale.
For example, use a two-octave F major scale.
On each note, play:
● four quavers
● then eight semiquavers
Then move to the next note of the scale.
This gives the tongue repeated work while also introducing small finger movements.
The important thing is to keep the articulation consistent from note to note. The tongue should not become heavier in the upper register or weaker in the lower register.
Students should listen for:
● even rhythm
● clear starts
● consistent tone
● steady air
● no squeezing in the high notes
● no collapsing in the low notes
This exercise is excellent because it develops tongue speed while also building scale fluency.
Exercise 3: Finger-Tongue Coordination
Once tongue speed is improving, the next step is coordination.
Many students think they have an articulation problem when they actually have a coordination problem.
The tongue and fingers must arrive together.
A very useful exercise is to take a scale or passage and practise it in two stages.
First, play it slurred.
This checks whether the fingers are moving smoothly and evenly without the tongue involved.
If the passage is not clean slurred, it will probably not be clean tongued.
Once the slurred version is even, play the same passage tongued.
The goal is to keep the same smooth air and finger movement, while adding a light tongue.
For example:
1. Play a descending F major scale slurred.
2. Immediately play the same scale tongued.
3. Keep the same air speed and finger efficiency.
4. Listen for whether the tongue and fingers are lining up.
This is one of the best ways to separate the problem.
If it is messy slurred, fix the fingers.
If it is clean slurred but messy tongued, fix the tongue coordination.
Exercise 4: Improving Staccato Quality
Staccato is often misunderstood.
Students sometimes think staccato means hitting the reed harder. It does not.
Staccato means the notes are shorter, but they still need to have a good sound.
A good staccato should feel light, bouncy, and controlled — almost like “bom-bom-bom” rather than a sharp, aggressive attack.
One of the best ways to improve staccato is to practise the passage legato first.
Take the staccato passage and play it smoothly, with a beautiful connected sound. This helps the student find a light tongue and steady air.
Then return to staccato, but keep the same light tongue quality.
The difference is that the notes are now shorter, not heavier.
The space between the notes should come from control, not from tension.
Students should listen for:
● clear note beginnings
● good tone inside each short note
● steady air
● light tongue contact
● no harsh attacks
● no collapsing at the end of each note
Staccato should still sound musical.
Exercise 5: Air Starts Without Tongue
Another excellent exercise is to practise starting notes without the tongue.
This teaches students how close the air is to making the reed vibrate.
Choose a comfortable note. Blow air through the instrument and allow the note to begin without tonguing.
The aim is to find the point where the reed begins vibrating from air alone.
Then practise ending the note without using the tongue.
This exercise helps students understand that the tongue is not responsible for forcing the sound out. The reed should already be ready to vibrate because of the air, embouchure, and setup.
Once this is understood, the tongue can be added back in lightly.
The tongue then becomes a prompt, not a punch.
How to Practise Articulation Without Creating Tension
Articulation practice can become tiring very quickly, especially if the student is forcing the tongue.
Short, focused practice is better than long, tense repetition.
A good practice structure might be:
● 2 minutes of single-note articulation
● 2 minutes of scale articulation
● 2 minutes of slurred-to-tongued coordination
● 2 minutes of staccato quality
● short rests between each exercise
The student should stop if the jaw, tongue, throat, or shoulders become tense.
Tension does not build speed. It blocks speed.
The best articulation work feels controlled, light, and repeatable.
What Students Should Listen For
When practising articulation, students should not only ask:
Can I play this faster?
They should ask:
● Are the note beginnings clean?
● Is the rhythm even?
● Does the tone stay centred?
● Is the tongue light?
● Are the fingers lining up with the tongue?
● Is the air still moving?
● Does the sound stay musical?
These questions help students practise with more awareness.
A fast but messy articulation is not the goal.
The goal is clarity with control.
How Private Lessons Help Articulation Improve
Articulation problems can have several different causes.
For one student, the issue may be tongue placement. For another, it may be air support. Another student may have fingers that are lifting too high or moving late. Another may be using a reed or mouthpiece setup that makes clean response more difficult.
This is why simply saying “practise tonguing more” is not always enough.
A teacher needs to identify the cause.
Is the student using too much tongue pressure? Is the air stopping between notes? Are the fingers and tongue out of sync? Is the reed too hard? Is the embouchure too tight? Is the student practising too fast too soon?
Once the cause is clear, the exercise becomes much more useful.
Good teaching gives the student a specific path forward.
Final Thoughts
Improving tongue speed on clarinet is not just about moving the tongue faster.
It is about developing light tongue contact, steady air, clean note beginnings, strong finger-tongue coordination, and a consistent sound.
Students should practise slowly, listen carefully, and build speed gradually.
When articulation is working well, the clarinet feels more responsive. Passages sound cleaner, rhythms become clearer, and the student has more control over style and expression.
The tongue should never fight the reed.
It should work with the air to help the sound speak clearly.
